Möbius Ribbon — bronze sculpture on a black base

A broad band closes into an oval ring, taking a single twist along the way — one face dark and matt, the other polished to a golden shine. It is that turn which makes the eye lose track of inside and outside: the two surfaces turn out to be one continuous plane. The sculpture is handmade: cast in bronze, then hand-ground, hand-polished and patinated, with each face of the ribbon finished separately.

This is handcrafted work in which the entire effect rests on the contrast between finishes — the golden face is brought to a mirror shine by hand, stage by stage, while the dark patina is built up in layers, so the dividing line and the depth of colour vary slightly from one piece to the next. The bronze sits on a low rectangular base in deep black, which steadies the form and lets it appear to float above the surface. The sculpture belongs in contemporary and minimalist interiors — on a console, sideboard, desk or in a display cabinet — and its imagery of infinity and the unity of opposites makes it an elegant gift for a jubilee or a significant anniversary.
