The Meeting — two-part bronze sculpture on stone blocks

Two white blocks placed facing one another form the profile of a face — the brow, nose and lips only emerge once the pair is set side by side. A small dark figure stands on top of each: one waits with an outstretched hand, the other steps towards it. Move the blocks closer together or further apart and the whole meaning of the scene shifts. The sculpture is handmade: the figures are cast in bronze, then hand-worked and patinated to a deep black.

This is handcrafted work in which contrast matters most — the rough, stone-like white of the blocks set against the small, coarsely modelled silhouettes that keep every trace of the hand that shaped them. Each element is finished separately, so the surface texture and the pattern of irregularities differ from one piece to the next. The upright, two-part composition can be arranged freely on a sideboard, console table, windowsill or bookcase, and also works well as a pair of bookends. Its imagery of dialogue, closeness and bridging distance makes it a memorable gift for a wedding, an anniversary, or a reconciliation.
